TRIP OVERVIEW

This journey will take you through some of the most diverse parts of Tanzania, off the beaten path, to see aspects of ancient cultures rarely seen by outsiders, as well as a rich array of wildlife.

You will spend time with, and learn something about unique communities, such as that of the Hadzabe and the Sukuma people. They and the others are gracious enough to have you witness and even live some of their traditions - hunting, dancing, singing, and whatever religious practices they may be engaged in at the time. This will be a full immersion which means at least one full day and night camping in the communities.

Part of the expedition is to see the diversity of wildlife in the world-famous Serengeti, well known for its cheetahs as well as other big cats. It’s also where you can witness parts of the Great Migration as millions of animals move in search of water, sometimes running a gauntlet of crocodiles.

The expedition is a partnership between The Image of Africa and photojournalist and photography instructor Phil Carpenter, who will lead a comprehensive photography workshop around which the trip will be centered. It means the approach to activities ensures, as much as possible, a rich photographic experience with individual coaching from Phil.

What makes this experience so special and unique is the time you get to spend at each location, exploring photographic possibilities and living the culture, away from the tourist crowds. The aim is to leave you with as rich an experience as possible.

Phil Carpenter

Phil is deeply curious about how people live. It’s at the heart of his work and it is what brought him to journalism. His nearly three decades experience as a photojournalist, and in recent years as TV reporter and video journalist, has taken him across the globe reporting on a range of issues.
First and foremost, Phil is a visual storyteller. His love for people and a genuine interest in their experiences and what motivates them are evident in his photography. He has a particular interest in cultural traditions and rituals and believes - it is these, more than anything else, that define a person. In fact he has spent the last few years documenting the cultural diversity of Canada where he lives.
He also has a passion for teaching and spent more than a decade as a part-time lecturer at the School of Journalism at Concordia University in Montreal. There he helped develop the institution's Graduate Diploma in Visual Journalism program. Phil also spent a month in Rwanda teaching multimedia journalism as part of a programme to train working journalists post Genocide.
Phil lives and works in Montreal.
