EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

This itinerary represents a combination of the most remote places in Tanzania. Due to their remoteness, these natural reserves have not seen many tourists and that is what makes those sites so special. Be ready to dive into the pure African wilderness!

This incredible journey combines the safari experience with chimpanzee trekking: Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park. These two remote parks represent some of the wildest parts of Africa and are something of a primate mecca - where a pilgrimage to meet the incredible chimpanzees takes place in the flourishing forests along the shore of one of the continent’s Great Lakes, Lake Tanganyika.

The safari part of this trip will take you to Katavi National Park, home to the largest herds of buffalo on the planet, and will offer you unspoiled wildlife viewing far off the beaten track with the African bush all to yourself! It is this awesome density of game as well as the sheer sense of wilderness that makes this park so special.

In addition to all of the above, you will get a chance for an introduction to the cultural life of this remote part of the country and will sneak peek into the life of the fishermen's villages meeting the welcoming local people as well as enjoying the aquatic landscape.

Be ready for a unique journey into the most exciting parts of Tanzania!

Our driver will be waiting for you at the airport of Dar Es Salaam to transfer you to your lodge before your journey begins the following day. Upon arrival at the lodge, a member of our team will meet you for a briefing and Q&A relating to your trip.

Be ready for a late morning 2-hour domestic flight to Kigoma. Upon arrival, meet your driver guide who will stay with you until the rest of your trip. After a quick lunch, drive for a city tour: visit the market, walk the streets of Kigoma, visit Dr. Livingstone museum for an introduction to the history of the region or go to a busy lake port of Kigoma.

Start your trip at sunrise by boarding a dhow boat from your lodge. Enjoy the sunrise as you cruise along the shores of Lake Tanganyika to the main entrance of Gombe Stream National Park. A boat transfer will take approximately 70 to 90 min depending on the weather conditions. Spend a day in the park with chimpanzees.

Prepare yourself for a full day of truly remarkable experience of chimpanzees and nature in one of the most remote and untouched parks in Tanzania. The majority of wildlife to be found at Gombe Stream is primates. In addition to the famous chimpanzees, you may see olive baboons, these have also been researched since the 1960s and are exceptionally habituated to humans. You may also spot the red-tailed and red colobus monkeys. Chimp Viewing is limited to a maximum of 6 people per group for 1 hour at a time. In the afternoon visit a neighboring fishing village, Mwamgongo, for a cultural tour. Stop at the village with our guide to understand fishing activities, palm oil extractions, embroidery, boat making, and visit the chief’s palace. Experience also the traditional Ha Dance. This village is 3km away from Mbali Mbali Gombe.

In the morning take a speedboat down Lake Tanganyika to Lagosa village - the gate to Mahale National park (prepare for a 4 hours boat ride without stops or 6 hour with stops). Upon arrival at Lagosa, enjoy spending the afternoon with local people in one of the most remote places in Tanzania. Take a boat to Mahale National Park and check in your camp.

Spend a full day in the remote wilderness. Mahale is home to a population of chimpanzees who have been studied by Japanese researchers; they have quietly conducted some of the most important scientific work on these primates from as early as 1960's. The park is just over 1600 sq kms and hence during the rainy season it can prove to be more challenging to trek for chimpanzees are they remain higher in the mountains when they do not need to come to the lake or rivers for water. A Boat Safari in Mahale is included in your trip and we offer two options: Option 1: See the Hippos and take a short river cruise and try the local methods of freshwater fishing. / Option 2: Visit a neighboring fishing village, Katumbi, for a Cultural Tour.

In the morning, be ready to get back to Lagosa village by boat and drive to Katavi National Park from there. In this park, you will find animals curious and unfamiliar to human contact. The flotillas of pelicans are a special sight. Prepare yourself for the fantastic experience in the wild bush. Arrive in the park by afternoon and drive straight to your camp for a sundowner.

Spend two days of game drives in Katavi with a one night game viewing included. The park is the country’s third-largest national park located in a remote location far off the beaten track. It is one of the most pristine and rugged nature reserves in Tanzania. The enormous grass landscape with thousands of buffalo and antelopes are a true highlight. In the beautiful forests and around the lakes you find many hippos, crocodiles and birds.

At noon, prepare to take a flight from Katavi Airstrip to Arusha Airport. If your international flight back home is the next day, the accommodation can be booked at extra cost.
